Woodlands: Palm-fronted privacy only 40 feet from the susurrant sea

Woodlands is a private home available for rent during most of the year. It is unique - in many ways. Sited on a large piece of private property, Woodlands is surrounded by soaring palms that provide cooling shade, privacy and give meaning to its name. Woodlands is Caribbean in every sense: dark round wallaba beams from Guyana, walls of textured white coral block, terra cotta tiles, seashell niches with hidden lamps that cast a soft, romantic light. Carefully combined by the architect, the natural materials create a home of unusually clean, open, romantic Caribbean comfort.

Woodlands is handsomely appointed with four bedrooms on the second floor. The front bedrooms have king-size beds, the rear have twin beds. All have private bath and shower. The bedrooms are pickled wood, which adds lightness and in informal mood. They are individually air conditioned (rarely needed, but nice to have when you want it). Each bedroom is entered through a covered walkway that overlooks a lush garden that grows inside the house. The front bedroom balconies have sweeping views of the sea. The sunsets, for which Barbados is famous, are spectacular, and perform right outside the balconies every evening. The modern bathrooms are decorated in ceramic tiles brought from Latin America. The living rooms are furnished in Italian design wicker with plump cushions of colorful sail cloth. A stone walkway leads back though the interior garden to the dining area and the kitchen. Woodlands is delightfully comfortable for just one couple or as many as four.

Woodlands comes with a full staff: a cook, a maid and gardener. The staff will shop for guests and serve to order. There are telephones, a security system and private safe for personal papers and valuables. But the most appealing feature of this marvelously maintained home is the fact that the soft white sand of the beach lies only 25 feet from the house. Yet, with the meticulously landscaped and lush gardens that separate the house and beach, you have cooling shade as well as complete privacy.

Cobblers Cove: An ideal location

Cobblers Cove is a beautiful, small bay just south of Speightstown on the more favored Caribbean side of the island. The beach is a crescent. There are only five homes on the bay, including Woodlands and the residence of Claudette Colbert. The location is 4 1/2 miles north of the world-famous Sandy Lane Hotel, and approximately 45 minutes from the airport.

The beach is natural white coral sand, which is soft, with the texture of Parisian talcum powder. The waters in front of the beach are totally free of coral and are superb for swimming. A reef nearby offers excellent snorkeling and scuba diving.

Water sports (as well as a magnificent meal or drinks at the beachside bar) are available at Cobblers Cove Hotel, a four minute amble down the beach. Golf and tennis are easily arranged.

Another advantage of the location is the village of Speightstown, which is five-minute stroll up the beach from Woodlands. Speightstown offers restaurants, a supermarket, banks, post office, drug store and various other shops.
