PGP and GoBeach Vacations
Sending confidential information, like credit card numbers, by e-mail is not 100% secure. There may be a 'lurker' around somewhere. To keep it in perspective though. chances for abuse are probably higher when you give your credit card to a waiter to pay the bar-bill than to send it around by e-mail. It is possible however to e-mail sensitive information safely by encrypting or scrambling the e-mail message.
The most secure and common way is currently with PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). This algorithm is supposed to be unbreakable, so you will be sure that only the recipient can decode and read it. PGP will become more and more common, especially since it is now a lot more user friendly than it used to be. Freeware versions of PGP are available from the MIT-website. There is also a free plug-in for one of the most favorite e-mail programs, Eudora Light. A good introduction in plain English is written by the Tourbus-staff: "Encryption for the Masses".
