St. Barths Island Info

The island is only eight square miles small, housing around 6,500 people. The natives ancestors are mostly from Brittany and Normandy. There are no casinos on the island, nightlife is mostly limited to some hangouts in Gustavia (e.g. Bar de l'Oubli and Le Select). Excellent restaurants are plentiful, mostly French, Creole and Italian. Please, do remember that St.Barts is not cheap! Shopping is limited to the capital of Gustavia, since the island has a free port status, you can often find good deals on luxury goods, perfumes and fine wines.

Beaches:
Most popular is Saint-Jean, located on the northern shore of the island, close to the airport. There are many restaurants and bars on the beach. Snorkeling is great, "be aware of the sea-urchins".
More secluded beaches include Anse de Lorient and Anse de Marigot. Not all beaches are easily accessible, some only by foot or by boat, like Anse de Columbier.
At Anse Toiny on the south shore the surf is quite rough , therefore popular with windsurfers.
The beach of Grand Chalet (within easy walking distance from Gustavia) is also known as Shell Beach, and is as the name implies not covered with sands but with shells.
Topless bathing is allowed on all beaches, and although nude sunbathing is officially prohibited by law on St. Barts, people visiting the beach of Anse de Grande Saline and Anse de Gouveneur often seem to have forgotten their bathing attire (sshhh...!)

Activities:
Diving and Snorkeling: St. Barts is almost completely surrounded by shallow-water reefs, ideal for snorkeling. The best diving spots are found around the many offshore rocks. Different species of coral, colorful sponges, lots of parrotfish, rays, snappers, groupers, etc. etc. as well as some caverns can be found depending on the dive location. From April to August seaturtles come to some of the beaches to lay their eggs. Migrating sperm whales can be spotted (when lucky) in May.
Boating: St. Barths is a popular yacht stop (conveniently located between the two big yachting centers of the Virgin Islands and Antigua). Rentals available, as well as picnic day-sailing excursions to 'deserted' beaches.
Other activities: hiking along the many 'goat paths', surfing, deep-sea fishing, tennis, horse riding, etc. etc. In the first week of December the Swedish Marathon Race is held.

How to get there:
The last minute of your flight to the St.Barts Airport is, well... you will see!
By Air: most people come in via St.Maarten, but there are also flights from Guadaloupe, St.Thomas, St. Croix, Puerto Rico, Anguilla and Saba.
By Boat: there is a ferry service with St.Maarten, or you can catch a ride with the many day-tourists from St.Maarten on a catamaran.
